This thought came into my head yesterday in Sunday School class. Ms. Thelma was teaching and she said something and what ever she said triggered this thought. Roommates. Yes I admit my mind does wonder. I'm sure a lot of people can say that too. I have this gift of multi-tasking. My husband thinks it's crazy but I can be reading, watching tv, listening to something, search the net and so on all at the same time and still keep track of it all. I try not to do that when I spend time with the Lord. I work at giving him all my attention.
Anyways this has got me thinking and I couldn't wait to research information on it. What are roommates? Two or more people who live together in one house or under one roof. Right. That about sums it up. When we receive Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are reborn. Born again, not physically but spiritually.
Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
Titus 3:6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,
When we believe that Jesus Christ died for us and we accept him as our Savior, he gives us a gift that will be with us forever. It's a gift that helps us out, teaches us, convict us, brings us joy, peace, humility, a Counselor and a reminder and so much more. It is the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles received it when Jesus appeared to them before his ascension.
John 20:22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
When we repent we will get that same gift, we'll be baptised with it. No not the water baptism but the spiritual baptism.
Acts 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 11:16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
So do you know what that means? Think about it. We get a roommate who moves into our house. But get this, when that happens it's not our house anymore.
Hebrews 3:6a But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. And we are his house,
1Corinthians 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
And once he has moved in he will never leave us. He'll always be with us no matter what the circumstances are.
Deuteronomy 31:8 The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."
Psalm 118:6 The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
Matthew 28:20b And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
So when the Holy Spirit moves in, he does things for us and with us. He is a counselor, a teacher, reminds us of things that we should or should not do, comforter, encourager, warns us, gives us hope, love, joy, peace, guard and a voice and pray in the Holy Spirit.
Luke12:12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."
John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—
John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
Acts 9:31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.
Acts 20:23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me.
Romans 5:5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
2Timothy 1:14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
Heb 3:7 So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice,
Jude 1:20 But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.
But we have to be careful for we can hurt the Holy Spirit and put out it's fire.
Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
1Thessalonians 5:19 Do not put out the Spirit’s fire;
So just like having a human roommate we can encourage them, love them, speak to them, help them and they can do the same to us but we can also hurt them and they us. The same goes with the Holy Spirit. We love him, encourage him by reading God's Words and Praying and He does do the same for us. He is a living being, believe it or not.
So let me ask you "Did you receive your roommate, the Holy Spirit when you believed or have you received Him at all?" Paul asked the same to some disciples in Ephesus.
Acts 19:2 and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"
I know I did back about 1979. I didn't live right for our Lord then but He never left me and in 2003, He finally brought me back to where I belong and have been going forth ever since serving our Lord and Savior. I don't do the best job at it but the Holy Spirit keeps working on me. I do know one thing, if it wasn't for having Jesus Christ in my life today, I wouldn't have the peace and joy that I have. I can't make it without Him in my life. Probably wouldn't have any hair on my head and I do have a lot of hair. Soooo glad that He is in my life and that He travels with me where ever I go and gives me encouragement and warnings. Those warnings aren't gut feelings they are God feelings another words the Holy Spirit.
Life is Good with God! Do you have Him?
