I don't see this as the positives out weighing the negatives, I see this as the negatives are on top of the positives. There are more negatives heard than there are positives in our world today. Let's see what we hear a lot of when we speak.
"I can't do it"
"I'm not good enough"
"I'm going to fail"
"I'm not healthy"
"I'm tired"
"I'm getting old"
"That is just my luck"
"I can't afford it"
(Stanley, 2011)
I am sure there are plenty more things we have heard that sound a lot like the small list above. Feelings of inadequacy drains the energy and the life out of all of us. Things like this are what is called a predator. It takes from us.
Proverbs 18:21
The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.
What we say does matter, whether we say it to someone else or to ourselves. It can be good words or bad words. The bad words disregards the sovereignty of God. Negative words and attitudes will make you feel unmotivated.
Here is where God can come in. Only he can come to the rescue.
Philippians 4:13
I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
With God we can reaffirm our statements from negatives to positives. Let's look at this list of positives.
"I will reach my goal"
"I am going to get well"
"I can do it"
"I am not tired"
"God provides enough"
"I choose to obey God no matter what"
(Stanley, 2011)
2 Corinthians 3:5
Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves,
but our competence comes from God.
Philippians 1:6
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on
to the completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
We can rely on God's power to work through us. Because of him, it is true and reliable, it is his promise. The promise of Philippians 4:13 is based on three things.
1. Where we stand in Christ and accepting his gift of salvation.
2. Who we know Jesus to be, he is Lord and Savior.
3. His promise is always with us. (Stanley, 2011)
God determines our future, he is in control at all times and he equips us with a positive attitudes over the negative attitudes.
